Birth control
(contraception) is any
method
, medicine, or device used to
prevent pregnancy. Women can choose from
many different types of birth control. Some
work better than others at preventing
pregnancy.

The type of birth control you use depends
on your health, your desire to have children
now or in the future, and your need to
prevent sexually transmitted infections.
Your doctor can help you decide which type
is best for you right now.

control method that is right for you and
your partner depends on many things,
and may change over time.

Before choosing a birth

FDA warning on power morcellators in
treatment for uterine fibroids

If your doctor recommends a hysterectomy
or myomectomy to treat your uterine fibroids,
ask your doctor if a power morcellator will be
used.

Power morcellators break uterine fibroids
into small pieces to remove them more
easily. Recently, the FDA warned against the
use of power morcellators for most women.

This is because uterine tissue may contain
undiagnosed cancer. While breaking up the
uterine tissue, power morcellators can
spread an undiagnosed cancer to other
parts of the body without your doctor
knowing it.
Endometriosis
Endometriosis
happens when the
lining of the uterus
(womb) grows outside
of the uterus
.

It may affect more than 11% of
American women between 15 and 44.1
It is especially common among women
in their 30s and 40s and may make it
harder to get pregnant.

Several different treatment options
can help manage the symptoms and
improve your chances of getting
pregnant

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis
, sometimes
called "endo," is a common health
problem in women. It gets its name
from the word endometrium, the
tissue that normally lines the uterus
or womb. Endometriosis happens
when this tissue grows outside of
your uterus and on other areas in
your body where it doesn't belong.
Most often, endometriosis is found
on the:
Ovaries
Fallopian tubes
Tissues that hold the uterus in place
Outer surface of the uterus

Other sites for growths can include the vagina,
cervix, vulva, bowel, bladder, or rectum. Rarely,
endometriosis appears in other parts of the body,
such as the lungs, brain, and skin
Infertility

Infertility means not being able to get pregnant
after one year of trying (or six months if a
woman is 35 or older). Women who can get
pregnant but are unable to stay pregnant may
also be infertile.

About 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the
United States ages 15-44 have difficulty getting
pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC

What causes infertility in
men?
Infertility in men is most
often caused by:

A problem called varicocele (VAIR-ih-koh-seel).
This happens when the veins on a man's
testicle(s) are too large. This heats the
testicles. The heat can affect the number or
shape of the sperm.

Other factors that cause a man to make too few
sperm or none at all.
Movement of the sperm. This may be caused
by the shape of the sperm.

Sometimes injuries or other damage to the
reproductive system block the sperm.

Sometimes a man is born with the problems
that affect his sperm. Other times problems
start later in life due to illness or injury. For
example, cystic fibrosis often causes infertility
in men.
What causes infertility in
women?

Most cases of female infertility are caused by
problems with ovulation. Without ovulation,
there are no eggs to be fertilized. Some signs
that a woman is not ovulating normally include
irregular or absent menstrual periods.

Ovulation problems are often caused by
polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a
hormone imbalance problem which can
interfere with normal ovulation.

PCOS is the most common cause of female
infertility. Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is
another cause of ovulation problems. POI
occurs when a woman's ovaries stop working
normally before she is 40. POI is not the same
as early menopause.

Less common causes of
fertility problems in women
include:

Blocked fallopian tubes due to pelvic
inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or
surgery for an ectopic pregnancy
Physical problems with the uterus
Uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous
clumps of tissue and muscle on the walls of the
uterus
Your Guide to the Female
Reproductive System
...

The female reproductive system is designed to
carry out several functions. It produces the
female egg cells necessary for reproduction,
called the ova or oocytes.

The system is designed to transport the ova to
the site of fertilization. Conception, the
fertilization of an egg by a sperm, normally
occurs in the fallopian tubes.

The next step for the fertilized egg is to implant
into the walls of the uterus, beginning the initial
stages of pregnancy.

If fertilization and/or implantation does not take
place, the system is designed to menstruate
(the monthly shedding of the uterine lining).

In addition, the female reproductive system
produces female sex hormones that maintain
the reproductive cycle.

The function of the external female
reproductive structures (the genitals) is

Female Reproductive System

The function of the external female
reproductive structures (the genitals) is
twofold: To enable sperm to enter the body
and to protect the internal genital organs from
infectious organisms. The main external
structures of the female reproductive system
include:

Labia majora: The labia majora
enclose and protect the other external
reproductive organs. Literally translated as
"large lips," the labia majora are relatively
large and fleshy, and are comparable to the
scrotum in males.

The labia majora contain sweat and
oil-secreting glands. After puberty, the labia
majora are covered with hair.

Labia minora: Literally
translated as "small lips,
" the
labia minora can be very small or up to 2
inches wide.
They lie just inside the labia majora, and
surround the openings to the vagina (the
canal that joins the lower part of the uterus to
the outside of the body) and urethra (the tube
that carries urine from the bladder to the
outside of the body).
============

Clitoris: The two labia minora meet at the
clitoris, a small, sensitive protrusion that is
comparable to the penis in males.

The clitoris is covered by a fold of skin, called
the prepuce, which is similar to the foreskin at
the end of the penis. Like the penis, the
clitoris is very sensitive to stimulation and can
become erect.
The internal reproductive
organs in the female include:

Vagina:
The vagina is a canal that joins the
cervix (the lower part of uterus) to the outside of
the body. It also is known as the birth canal.

Uterus (womb): The uterus is a hollow,
pear-shaped organ that is the home to a
developing fetus. The uterus is divided into two
parts: the cervix, which is the lower part that
opens into the vagina, and the main body of the
uterus, called the corpus.

The corpus can easily expand to hold a
developing baby. A channel through the cervix
allows sperm to enter and menstrual blood to
exit.

Ovaries: The ovaries are small, oval-shaped
glands that are located on either side of the
uterus. The ovaries produce eggs and hormones.

Fallopian tubes: These are narrow
tubes that are attached to the upper part of the
uterus and serve as tunnels for the ova (egg
cells) to travel from the ovaries to the uterus.

Conception, the fertilization of an
egg by a sperm
, normally occurs in the
fallopian tubes. The fertilized egg then moves to
the uterus, where it implants into the lining of
the uterine wall.
What Happens During the
Menstrual Cycle
?

Females of reproductive age experience
cycles of hormonal activity that repeat at
about one-month intervals. With every cycle, a
woman's body prepares for a potential
pregnancy, whether or not that is the woman's
intention.

The term menstruation refers to the periodic
shedding of the uterine lining. (Menstru
means "monthly.'')

The average menstrual cycle takes about 28
days and occurs in phases: the follicular
phase, the ovulatory phase (ovulation), and
the luteal phase.

=====

There are four major
hormones
(chemicals that stimulate or
regulate the activity of cells or organs)
involved in the menstrual cycle:

follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing
hormone, estrogen, and progesterone.
Ovulatory Phase of the
Menstrual Cycle

The ovulatory phase, or ovulation, starts about
14 days after the follicular phase started. The
ovulatory phase is the midpoint of the
menstrual cycle, with the next menstrual
period starting about two weeks later. During
this phase, the following events occur:

Your Guide to the Female
Reproductive System

The rise in estrogen from the dominant follicle
triggers a surge in the amount of luteinizing
hormone that is produced by the brain.
This causes the dominant follicle to release its
egg from the ovary.

As the egg is released (a process called
ovulation), it is captured by finger-like
projections on the end of the fallopian tubes
(fimbriae). The fimbriae sweep the egg into the
tube.

Also during this phase, there is an increase in
the amount and thickness of mucus produced
by the cervix (lower part of the uterus).

If a woman were to have intercourse during
this time, the thick mucus captures the man's
sperm, nourishes it, and helps it to move
towards the egg for fertilization
=====

Once it releases its egg, the
empty follicle develops into
a new structure called the
corpus luteum.
The corpus luteum secretes the hormone
progesterone. Progesterone prepares the
uterus for a fertilized egg to implant.

If intercourse has taken place and a man's
sperm has fertilized the egg (a process called
conception), the fertilized egg (embryo) will
travel through the fallopian tube to implant in
the uterus. The woman is now considered
pregnant.

If the egg is not fertilized, it passes through
the uterus. Not needed to support a
pregnancy, the lining of the uterus breaks
down and sheds, and the next menstrual
period begins.
How Many Eggs Does a
Woman Have?

The vast majority of the eggs within the ovaries
steadily die, until they are depleted at
menopause. At birth, there are approximately 1
million to 2 million eggs; by the time of puberty,
only about 300,000 remain.

Of these, only about 500 will be ovulated during
a woman's reproductive lifetime. Any remaining
eggs gradually die out at menopause
Vaginal yeast infections

Most women will get a vaginal yeast
infection at some point in their life.
Symptoms of vaginal yeast infections
include burning, itching, and thick,
white discharge.

Yeast infections are easy to treat, but
it is important to see your doctor or
nurse if you think you have an
infection.

Yeast infection symptoms are similar
to other vaginal infections and
sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
If you have a more serious infection,
and not a yeast infection, it can lead to
major health problems.
====

What is a vaginal yeast
infection?

A vaginal yeast infection is an
infection of the vagina that causes
itching and burning of the vulva, the
area around the vagina. Vaginal yeast
infections are caused by an
overgrowth of the fungus Candida
''The most common
symptom of a vaginal
yeast infection is
extreme itchiness in
and around the vagina
.

Other signs and
symptoms include:

Burning, redness, and swelling of
the vagina and the vulva
Pain when urinating
Pain during sex
Soreness
A thick, white vaginal discharge
that looks like cottage cheese
and does not have a bad smell

You may have only a few of these
symptoms. They may be mild or
severe.

How is a yeast infection
treated?
Yeast infections are usually treated
with antifungal medicine. See your
doctor or nurse to make sure that you
have a vaginal yeast infection and not
another type of infection.

You can then buy antifungal medicine
for yeast infections at a store, without a
prescription. Antifungal medicines
come in the form of creams, tablets,
ointments, or suppositories that you
insert into your vagina. You can apply
treatment in one dose or daily for up to
seven days, depending on the brand
you choose.

Your doctor or nurse can also give you
a single dose of antifungal medicine
taken by mouth, such as fluconazole
(floo-CON-uh-zohl).

If you get more than four vaginal yeast
infections a year, or if your yeast
infection doesn't go away after using
over-the-counter treatment, you may
need to take regular doses of
antifungal medicine for up to six
months
Encouraging abstinence is
fine
, but it is effective only
when coupled with
comprehensive education about
birth control
.

Of the many types of birth
control, the two most
recommended by the American
Academy of Pediatrics are
intrauterine devices (IUDs) and
contraceptive implants,
sometimes called long-acting
reversible contraception (LARC).

These can be used by teenagers
of any age, even if they have
never been pregnant, and even if
they are virgins.m
These two methods are
recommended based on
their effectiveness
. Without birth
control, in a one-year period almost 90
percent of sexually active teens will become
pregnant.

If they use condoms, 18 percent will become
pregnant. With the birth control shot known as
Depo-Provera and birth control pills, 6
percent and 9 percent of teens, respectively,
will become pregnant.

However, of women using an IUD or the
implant, less than 1 percent will become
pregnant. Even better, once the IUD or
implant is placed, it lasts for three to 10 years
depending on the type.

While condoms are an ineffective method of
birth control, especially when compared with
LARC, they are still the only method available
to help prevent the spread of sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs). Therefore, we
recommend using both — LARC for birth
control and condoms for STDs. This is
especially important in South Florida, as Miami
has more new cases of HIV, syphilis and
chlamydia than any other city in the U.S.

Why Do I Have Cramps but No
Period?

Lots of women get pelvic pain and cramping, but
your period isn't always to blame. Cysts,
constipation, pregnancy -- even cancer -- can make it
feel like your monthly visitor is about to stop by.

Your Period: 5 Things You
Didnt Know
Women have about 450 periods during their
lifetimes. Even so, your period can still manage to
surprise you, and not just by showing up when you
least expect it.

Common Period Problems
Don't let your period derail your life. You can still do
everything that you would during the rest of the
month, if you know how to manage the baggage your
monthly visitor may bring.

Menstrual Pain
Menstrual cramps are the leading cause of
absenteeism in women younger than 30 years.
Although over half of women who have menstrual
periods experience some discomfort, 10% are
temporarily disabled by symptoms.

Heavy Periods (Menorrhagia)
Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods, or
menorrhagia, are the most common type of abnormal
bleeding from the uterus.

Irregular Periods
Periods vary widely from woman to woman. Some
periods are punctual, some are unpredictable. On
average, a woman gets her period every 21 to 35
days. A period usually lasts about three to five days.
Irregular periods may require treatment.
Menstrual Blood Problems: Clots,
Color, and Thickness

If your menstrual blood varies in color and consistency
throughout your monthly period, it's very likely that it's
perfectly normal.

Menstrual Cup
There’s a lot of buzz about this eco-friendly alternative
to pads and tampons. But what is a menstrual cup?

Why Am I Spotting Between
Periods?
Most women experience spotting between their periods
at some point. Usually, it’s nothing to worry about. A
number of things can cause it to happen.

Your Period and Your Breasts
Breast symptoms are the strongest just before your
period starts, and improve either during or right after it.

Painful Ovulation (Mittelschmerz)
Mittelschmerz is the pelvic and lower abdominal pain
that some women experience during ovulation.

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)
Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a sudden, potentially fatal
condition caused by an overgrowth of bacteria called
Staphylococcus aureus, or staph. TSS affects
menstruating women, especially those who use super-
absorbent tampons.

Symptoms of Toxic Shock
Syndrome
TSS symptoms usually come on quickly, about 2 days
after the bacteria infects you. The way TSS affects your
body depends on the type of bacteria causing your
condition.

Treat and Prevent TSS
Toxic shock syndrome requires immediate emergency
care in a hospital. If you think you have it, get medical
help as soon as possible. Call 911 or get to a hospital
emergency room right away.

Ovarian Pain: Causes,
Diagnosis, Treatments

Your ob-gyn will deal with some of the most
health issues in your life, including birth control,
childbirth, and menopause. A number of different
conditions, from cysts to tumors, can cause
ovarian pain.

Cysts on the Ovaries
Ovarian cysts are common, especially with woman
who still get their period. They’re solid or fluid-
filled pockets in or on your ovary.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
(PCOS) and Weight Gain
Most women at some point have to contend with
weight gain. But for women with polycystic ovary
syndrome (PCOS), losing weight can become a
constant struggle.

What Is Vaginal Dryness?
Vaginal dryness occurs when the tissues of
the vagina are not well lubricated and healthy
.

It can occur at any age but is especially common in older
women.

Vaginal dryness can cause pain or discomfort during
sexual intercourse, which may affect your relationship with
your partner.

The condition can also lead to bacterial or yeast infections.
Vaginal Dryness Symptoms

Symptoms of vaginal dryness may include:

Soreness, itching, or burning of the vagina
Painful intercourse
Light bleeding after intercourse
What Causes Vaginal Dryness?

A number of factors may contribute to vaginal dryness,
including:

Low estrogen Vaginal dryness is most often caused by a
decrease in estrogen levels. Estrogen is a hormone that
helps keep the tissues of your vagina lubricated and
healthy.

Many factors can cause a drop in estrogen levels, such as:

Menopause or perimenopause (a transition time before
menopause)
Childbirth
Breastfeeding
Smoking
Surgery to remove the ovaries
Certain immune disorders
Cancer treatments
Anti-estrogen medicines

Douching and other irritants Certain soaps, lotions,
perfumes, and douches can disrupt the natural balance of
chemicals in your vagina, leading to dryness.

Other medicines Allergy, cold, and asthma medicines that
contain antihistamines can have a drying effect on the
body and contribute to reduced vaginal lubrication.

Certain antidepressants may also lead to a reduction in
vaginal secretions.

Anxiety Stress and anxiety can affect sexual desire and
may lead to vaginal dryness.

Sjogren's syndrome This rare autoimmune disease can
cause dryness in the eyes, mouth, and vagina.

Low sexual desire A low libido or other sexual problems
may give way to dryness, and conversely, the dryness
may worsen libido.
Vaginal Dryness Treatment

Treatments for vaginal dryness vary depending on the
cause of your condition. Treatment options include
:

Lubricants and creams These products can help moisten
the vaginal area for several hours or up to a day.

You can use a water-soluble vaginal lubricant during
intercourse to help with dryness.

Estrogen Topical estrogen can alleviate symptoms of
vaginal dryness. It's available as a tablet, cream,
suppository, or ring that's placed directly into the vagina.
Alternative Therapies for Vaginal Dryness

Be sure to talk to your doctor before using any type of
alternative treatment for vaginal dryness. You'll need to
discuss the risks and benefits of the therapy.

Some common alternative therapies for vaginal dryness
include:

Soybeans Soy contains substances called isoflavones,
which may work like estrogen in the body.

Some women consume foods rich in soy (such as whole
soybeans, tofu, and soy milk) to improve symptoms of
vaginal dryness.

Note that research on the effects of soy in this area is still
ongoing.

Wild yam Some women claim that using creams containing
wild yam can help with vaginal dryness.

Still, there's not enough scientific evidence to show that
these products are effective.
Vaginal odor is any odor that originates from the
vagina. It's normal for your vagina to have a slight
odor. But, a strong vaginal odor — for instance, a
"fishy" smell — might be abnormal and could indicate
a problem.

Abnormal vaginal odor that happens because of
infection or another problem is usually associated
with other vaginal signs and symptoms such as
itching, burning, irritation or discharge...

=====
Vaginal odor may vary throughout your menstrual
cycle and may be especially noticeable right after
having sex.

Normal sweating also can cause a vaginal odor.
Though it may be tempting to douche or use a vaginal
deodorant to decrease vaginal odor, these products
may actually increase irritation and other vaginal
symptoms.

Bacterial vaginosis — an overgrowth of normally
occurring vaginal bacteria — is the most common
vaginal infection that causes a vaginal odor.

Trichomoniasis — a sexually transmitted infection —
also can lead to vaginal odor. Chlamydia and
gonorrhea infections usually don't cause vaginal
odors. Neither do yeast infections.

Generally, if you have vaginal odor without other
vaginal symptoms, it's unlikely that your vaginal odor
is abnormal.

Common causes of abnormal vaginal odor include:

Vaginitis (bacterial vaginosis)
Poor hygiene
A retained or forgotten tampon left in place for several
days
Trichomoniasis

Less commonly, abnormal vaginal odor may result
from:

Rectovaginal fistula (an abnormal opening between
the rectum and vagina that allows feces to leak into
the vagina)
How to Get Rid of Vaginal Odor...  Ways to Get Rid of
Vaginal Odor

Vaginal odor is often more noticeable just after sex and can vary throughout the
menstrual cycle. Normal sweating can also be a cause a vaginal odor.

This is often where the the idea of using vaginal douching and other vaginal
deodorant-type products comes to mind, but these products can actually increase
irritation and other vaginal symptoms due to their chemical-filled ingredient list. (1)

Instead of douching and other potentially toxic feminine hygiene products, try the
following natural remedies.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains amazing antibacterial and antiseptic properties that can
help fight vaginal odor. (2) Taking a bath with apple cider vinegar can help fight off the
toxins and bacteria that cause vaginal odor while restoring the acidic quality of the
vaginal flora. Try drinking a glass of water mixed with one or two tablespoons of apple
cider vinegar daily.

2. Baking Soda

Baking soda can be used to balance the pH level in your body. When the pH level is in
balance, the problem of vaginal odor will dissipate, which means you can add natural
deodorizer to the list of baking soda uses. (3)

You can simply add half a cup of baking soda to your bathwater and soak for about 15–
20 minutes. Then thoroughly dry your body before putting on your clothing. Make sure
to not allow moisture to sit in any folds or the groin area of the body.

3. Probiotics

We love probiotics since they can help keep the gut healthy, but did you know that
probiotics can do wonders for vaginal odor? Miso, kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt and kefir
are all great options. Probiotic yogurt, for example, is rich in lactobacillus bacteria,
which helps fight candida infection, a common cause of vaginal odor. It also helps
restore the normal vaginal pH level, which can remove vaginal odor. (4)

4. White Vinegar and Sea Salt

While apple cider vinegar seems to get all the glory when it comes to home remedies,
let’s not forget white vinegar. White vinegar can help neutralize odors by breaking
down odor proteins, and a white vinegar bath may help eliminate vaginal odor and
help restore pH levels in the vagina. (5)

Just a half cup each of white vinegar and sea salt in lukewarm bath water several times
a week may do the trick.

5. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil contains strong antifungal properties as well as being a great antiseptic.
These characteristics help get rid of bacteria that may contribute to the problem of
vaginal odor and discomfort. (6)

Add a few drops combined with water and witch hazel on a cotton pad and then
applying it to the effected area daily can make a big difference. Make sure to dilute with
the water and witch hazel since tea tree oil can cause some initial sensitivity to the
groin area.

Water
I cannot stress enough the importance of water and lots of it. The mucous vaginal
membranes need water to function properly so they remain well-hydrated. Water helps
lubricate your vagina naturally, which aids in diminishing vaginal smells.
Female Genital Problems...
Most women experience minor vaginal problems from time to time.
These problems can be related to menstrual cycles, sex, infection,
birth control methods, aging, medicines, or changes after
pregnancy.

A change in your normal vaginal discharge may be the first sign of
a vaginal problem. Changes in urination, such as having to urinate
more frequently or having a burning feeling when you urinate,
also may be a symptom of a vaginal problem.

Conditions that may cause a change in your normal vaginal
discharge include:

Infections of the vagina, such as a yeast infection, bacterial
vaginosis, trichomoniasis, human papillomavirus (HPV), or herpes
=========

Infection of the cervix (cervicitis).
An object in the vagina, such as a forgotten tampon.
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as chlamydia or
gonorrhea.
Various sex practices, such as oral-to-vaginal and anal-to-vaginal
contact.
Vaginal medicines or douching.

Pelvic Pain

The exact cause of pelvic pain may be hard to find. The severity of
your pain and other symptoms you have may help determine what
is causing the pain. For example: A condition, such as functional
ovarian cysts camera.gif, may cause pelvic pain and vaginal
bleeding when you are not having your period.
Female Genital Problems
The presence or excess growth of yeast cells, bacteria, or viruses
can cause a vaginal infection. A vaginal infection may occur when
there is a change in the normal balance of organisms in your
vagina.

The three most common types of vaginal infections are:

Candida vulvovaginitis (yeast infections).
Bacterial infections (bacterial vaginosis).
Parasitic infections (trichomoniasis).

Common symptoms of vaginal infection include:

Increase or change in the vaginal discharge, including gray,
green, or yellow discharge.
Vaginal redness, swelling, itching, or pain.
Vaginal odor.
Burning with urination.
Pain or bleeding with sex.

If you are pregnant and have vaginal symptoms, talk with your
doctor about your symptoms before considering any home
treatment measures. Some home treatment measures may not be
appropriate, depending on the cause of your vaginal infection.
Conditions such as bacterial vaginosis can affect your pregnancy,
so it is important to talk with your doctor and be treated
appropriately.

Vaginal infections may increase the risk for pelvic infections, such
as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

Rashes, sores, blisters, or lumps in the
vaginal or vulvar area

Many conditions can cause a rash, sore, blister, or lump in your
vaginal area (vulva camera.gif). One of the most common causes of
a rash is genital skin irritation that may occur when soap is not
rinsed off the skin or when tight-fitting or wet clothes rub against
the skin. A sore, blister, or lump in your vaginal area may require a
visit to your doctor.

Treatment of a vaginal problem depends on the cause of the
problem, the severity of your symptoms, and your overall health
condition.

Check your symptoms to decide if and when you should see a
doctor.
